There is a game we play in our family called the Hi-Lo.

We share with each other the “high” and the “low” of our day.

Often times the high and the low occur at the same time.

The extremity of the heights and the deepest of depths can create a conflict of emotion.

Tears and laughter flow together like oil and water.

At any minute I can switch from joy to pain.

At the lowest, “Somebody take me off this crazy thing!”, I scream out loud or I cry in silence.

Or at the highest, I laugh at loud or giggle on the inside, saying “Let’s do it again!”

I am not speaking of this as a random philosopher, but as a student of life.

There is a real person behind the exteriors of me and the expectations of others.

Joy and suffering come from the same cup.

Yet, I drink of it, not knowing which will come.

At the peak of the high, I choose to remember the low with humility.

At the depths of the low, I choose to acknowledge the high with gratitude.

That is how I choose to handle the Hi-Lo.

  1. Absolutely breathtaking artwork and message. Thank you for sharing your God given talents for the uplifting of your fellow travelers in life. I love the idea of the Hi-Low game!

  2. Beautiful imagery, powerful, thought-provoking words.
I especially can relate to the cup.
Joy and suffering come from the same cup.
Yet, I drink of it, not knowing which will come.
The Hi-Low game is great, but you are so right that the high and low can occur at the same time. I find myself struggling with that at times, conflicted at feeling both at the same time.
